“But there are much worse games to play.”
~Katniss Everdeen, Mockingjay (398)
Young adult literature has come a long way in the years since I was a young adult. Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games Trilogy is a forceful, violent, emotional, hope-filled thrill ride. As a reader, I was unprepared for some of the plot elements. As a parent reader, I was surprised the story is classified as young adult (even though the narrative is that of a teenage girl). As a writer I was inspired by the boldness and speed with which Collins presented the concept, crafted the narrative, and executed the delivery. These three books will be the litmus I used in evaluating young adult literature; both what I read and any attempts I make in the genre.
